Over 850,000 cars were stolen throughout the United States in 2024, but which one was involved in the most thefts?

A study from Chris Lewis of Finance Buzz tells us the answer, which was obtained by looking at 2024 data provided by the National Insurance Crime Bureau in May.

Coming in at No. 1 on the list was the Hyundai Elantra, with 31,712 of the vehicles getting stolen. Hyundai actually had the top-two cars on the list, with the Sonata coming in second with 26,720 stolen in 2024.

Hyundai wasn’t the only company to have multiple cars in the top 10, as a pair of Kia and Honda vehicles also made the cut in the same list.

Here’s a look at the entire top-10 list provided by the data:

1. Hyundai Elantra: 31, 712

2. Hyundai Sonata: 26,720

3. Chevrolet Silverado 1500: 21,666

4. Honda Accord: 18,539

5. Kia Optima: 17,493

6. Honda Civic: 15,727

7. Kia Soul: 13,562

8. Ford F150 Series: 12,952

9. Toyota Camry: 12,296

10. Dodge Charger: 11,452

Lewis goes on to note that a 2023 TikTok trend may have played a role in the staggering amount of thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

“In 2023, after TikTok videos showing an exploit that allowed individuals to start engines with just a screwdriver and USB cable, states began urging recalls for Kia and Hyundai models after an increase in thefts,” he said. “Similarly, the Kia Optima and Kia Soul also landed among the top 10.”

The Elantra topped the list of the most stolen cars in 21 states. Meanwhile, the Silverado led the way in nine states and the F150 was the leader in six states.
