I am asking a question we’ve probably asked before, one that is nevertheless worth revisiting every so often.
Will cameras make our roadways safer?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety seems to think that going the way of Canada and adding more cameras will make roads more safe. I am skeptical.
But then, I live in Chicago, a city famous for setting up speed cameras in such a way that many, myself included, feel it is more about revenue than safety.
On the other hand, I find red-light cameras a little easier to defend — unless you shorten yellow lights, which, ahem, Chicago was accused of.
I am all for road safety, but I guess I am a camera skeptic, especially when it comes to speed cameras, for the reasons above.
Now it’s your turn. What do you think?
Sound off below.
