Lexus’ latest trademark filing points to new luxury EV

An all-new Lexus model could be on its way to local showrooms, following the discovery of a new trademark in Australia.

Lexus has filed a trademark application for the ZC name locally, but little is known about the forthcoming luxury car at this early stage.

The Japanese automaker unveiled the LF-ZC concept at the Japan motor show in 2023, featuring a sharply creased, fastback-style body, with plans to put the vehicle into production in 2026.

The concept was also the centerpiece of the Lexus-sponsored Melbourne Cup Carnival in 2024.

At the time, Lexus said the name stood for ‘Lexus Future Zero-emission Catalyst’, as the concept was powered by a next-generation battery-electric powertrain.

Notably, however, Lexus has typically reserved names ending in ‘C’ for coupes and convertibles – see the LC, SC and RC.

The LF-ZC concept promised a driving range of more than 800 kilometres, with a recharging time of just 20 minutes.

It’s not clear which segment the Lexus ZC will compete in, but it’s possible the model will target electric liftbacks like the BMW i4 and Polestar 2.

The concept measures 4750mm long and 1880mm wide on a 2890mm wheelbase, making it fairly similar in size to the IS sedan.

Simultaneously in revealing the LF-ZC concept, Lexus also unveiled the LF-ZL which was an even larger vehicle – measuring 5.3m long – that blurs the lines between passenger cars and SUVs.

The ZC is the latest in a range of electric vehicles expected to be on the way from Lexus, with the brand filing trademarks for the HZ and TZ names back in 2023.
