Norway is leading the charge globally when it comes to electric vehicles (EVs), and Elon Musk’s Tesla is the biggest beneficiary.

According to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, via Joe Finnerty of GridServe, battery electric vehicles made up 89.3% of new car sales in Norway in the third quarter of 2024, which was nearly 39% higher than Denmark, the next closest country.

“As Norway goes, so goes the rest of the world,” Musk said of the electric vehicle revolution in Norway. “Combustion engines will be like the steam engine — quaint, but primitive.

The EV trend in Norway has not slowed down at all in 2025. In fact, popularity with EVs in Norway is actually growing.

Also per the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, via Mobility Portal, 96.9% of all cars registered in Norway during the month of June were EVs. The exact total was 17,799 out of 18,376 new registrations. To compare, EVs were responsible for 80% of new registrations in June last year.

The same report shows that Musk’s Tesla ran away with the top spot of the best-selling car brands in June, owning a whopping 30.7% market share (5,646) in the country.

The Tesla Model Y was the most popular model, reaching a mark of 5,004 units, which amounts to a total of 27.2% share of all EVs sold throughout the month of June.

Rounding out the top five was Volkswagen (10.6%), Volvo (6.7%), Toyota (6.1%) and BMW (5.6%). Toyota’s bZ4X (825 units) and Volkwagen’s ID.4 (714 units) were a distant second and third, respectively, to the Model Y.

Tesla then reappears on the list of the most popular EVs sold thanks to the Model 3, which saw 639 units sold. The No. 5 EV was the BYD Sealion 7, coming in at 604 units.

On the flip side, there were only 577 new registrations of cars that were not fully electric in June. And, among those, 375 were hybrids.
