As I was channel surfing this weekend, I came across “Days of Thunder”, the 1990 Tom Cruise vehicle about NASCAR that brought us the iconic line “rubbin’, son, is racing.”
I came across the flick during the same weekend that advertisements for Brad Pitt’s new “F1” film have blanketed cable television.
I am sure we’ve asked before, but I wanted to check in again — what’s the best racing movie?
Objectively, it’s probably “Grand Prix” with James Garner, though I also give “Rush” and “Ford Vs. Ferrari” high marks. I haven’t seen Sly Stallone in “Driven” — which is probably a good thing. I also have not seen the more recent “Gran Turismo”, which got decent reviews.
I guess the animated “Cars” series counts, but I haven’t seen any of them.
I’ve always found “Days of Thunder” to be fun, though it falls short of being a great movie. Will Ferrell’s “Talladega Nights” is funny but it’s too much of a satire for me to call it a racing movie.
So, what do you think? Go ahead and sound off below.
