Researchers at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) have introduced an airless tire that dynamically adjusts its stiffness, paving the way for next-generation mobility solutions. Unlike conventional tires, this cutting-edge morphing wheel changes shape in real time to conquer a variety of terrains. Watch the video at Your Future Machine.
Inspired by the fluid properties of water droplets, the design features a flexible outer ring supported by adjustable wire spokes. By altering tension, the wheel seamlessly transitions between a firm structure for smooth roads and a softer form to handle rough terrain, even climbing stairs.
While still in development, KIMM sees a future where this adaptive technology powers wheelchairs, autonomous robots and next-gen vehicles, enhancing mobility like never before.
