Ford Focus may be revived as SUV – report

The Ford Focus could return to showrooms in the coming years, with the small car potentially being brought back as a small or medium SUV.

According to UK publication Autocar, Ford is readying the launch of a new SUV designed to fill the hole being left by the Focus hatchback and wagon.

Despite the Focus remaining in production in Germany until November 2025, the small car was axed locally at the end of 2022, alongside the Fiesta city hatch.

While there’s no confirmation yet of the new model taking over the Focus badge, there’s been a recent trend of automakers recycling old passenger car nameplates for new SUVs – such as Renault’s Megane E-Tech, Volkswagen’s Jetta VS7, and Ford’s own Capri and Puma.

Ford Australia currently has only two SUVs in its stable – the Ranger-based Everest and the electric Mustang Mach-E – after the Puma and Escape were dropped from the lineup in recent years.

The report claims Ford will introduce the “Focus-sized” SUV to the European market alongside the Escape – known there as the Kuga – with the vehicle expected to be priced between the cheaper Puma city SUV and the larger Explorer.

Autocar reports the so-called Focus SUV is expected to be pitched against the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Volkswagen Tiguan – some of the best-selling cars in Europe – suggesting the model could end up being a medium-sized SUV like the Kuga/Escape.

Said to be based on Ford’s C2 architecture – the same that underpinned the last Focus – the forthcoming SUV will reportedly offer both hybrid and electric powertrains, and will be built at the company’s Spanish factory in Valencia.

The C2 architecture has never been used for an electric vehicle.

The Focus SUV is expected to be unveiled in 2027.
